Meat products typically used as foods cover a wide range of processed animal flesh and by-products, blood and parts of livestock, poultry, seafood and game. Such products range from ground beef (hamburger) to sausage, chicken nuggets, surimi and supplements like fish oil. When chopped into chunks or ground for packaging or further processing, meat parts may be transferred using hygienic positive displacement pumps. Vertically mounted and hopper-fed positive displacement pumps can transfer these small soft solids and semi-solids as well as liquids. Positive displacement pumps enable easy control of flow rate using variable speed drives and can handle high pressures developed due to friction, without damaging meat tissues or properties. Hygienic designs are required for meat products destined for human consumption, and pumps are easily disassembled for regular cleaning or may be cleaned in place.
Viking pumps are used to transport meat products from the initial processing steps of chopping or grinding to packaging or to further processing such as curing, smoking, sausage making or fermentation, and then transferring the finished product to packaging. They are also used to transfer blood from the kill floor to processing, and tallow and lard from the rendering plant.
