Shampoos are personal and pet care hygiene products used to remove and wash away dirt, oil and grime from hair. Some are medicinal, such as antiseborrheic, anti-bacterial or anti-fungal.
Most shampoos are 70% to 80% water, but the addition of rheological modifiers and other viscous ingredients increases their viscosity to 2,000 to 20,000 cPs, necessitating the use of positive displacement pumps. They are typically shear-thinning mixtures requiring low-shear pumping action. Shampoos are generally slightly acidic, lubricating liquids with pH in the range of 4.5 to 5.5.
Viking internal gear pumps and Viking hygienic lobe or circumferential piston pumps are well suited to transfer shampoo ingredients and finished shampoos due to their ability to handle very high viscosities with gentle, low shear pumping action. The hygienic models are easy to clean in place or strip clean to ensure maximum process hygiene.
Viking stainless steel internal gear pumps are used to transfer liquid ingredients from railcar or tank truck to storage. Viking hygienic pumps transfer pre-dissolved solids like surfactants and thickeners to the mixing vessel, as well as transferring liquid surfactants,
oil based conditioning ingredients and emollients from storage to blending. From the mix tank they pump the blended shampoo through the homogenizer to the packaging machine.
