Toothpastes are used to keep teeth clean and healthy. It is abrasive to assist in breaking up plaque and usually features a fluoride compound to prevent tooth decay.

Toothpaste is made by combining water, binders and humectants, then gums and thickeners, then abrasives and therapeutic agents, usually fluoride, then flavoring agents, colorants, sweeteners and preservatives. The ingredients are mixed together to form a paste or gel, which is then packaged in tubes. The process may be batch or continuous.

Viscosity may range from 70,000 to 100,000 cPs, so positive displacement pumps are ideal for toothpaste transfer. The intermeshing of stainless steel rotors gently move the toothpaste with very low shear. To prevent bacterial or fungal contamination, hygienic pumps are used and the systems are regularly cleaned. They allow easy manual or automatic control of flow rate to match production capacity using variable speed drives.
