In ABS processing, particularly at elevated temperatures, precision in pump selection is key to maintaining efficiency and reliability. We are pleased to share a successful application story involving India’s leading producer of ABS plastic.
Our customer, a trusted name in thermoplastics, manufacturing high-performance ABS products that form the backbone of numerous industries—from automotive and consumer durables to lighting and cosmetic packaging. Their expertise in acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene-based resins sets them apart in India. But, handling a complex fluid composition—polymer, solvent, and unreacted monomer—with a viscosity of 60,000 cP and a temperature of 200°C, posed several equipment challenges:
- High viscosity required the pump to be installed below the tank to minimize suction loss.
- Their existing External gear pumps with 180° port orientations introduced excessive bends, leading to high frictional losses and inefficiencies.
- The pumps operated at high RPM, resulting in frequent wear and tear and increased downtime.
To meet the demanding conditions of the application, a tailored solution was proposed:
- Viking USB series Internal gear pump, designed with jacketing to maintain fluid temperature and process stability.
- Integrated 90° ports, allowing smoother piping layout and reducing pressure drop.
- Selected pump at lower RPM and equipped it with coated bushings, significantly improving wear resistance and life expectancy.
We highlighted to the customer the importance of customizing gear pump solutions for high-viscosity, high-temperature applications—and the impact of thoughtful design in securing long-term solution for their challenges.
