Bei Pumpen handelt es sich um einen Hohlraum, in dem die rotierende Welle in das Pumpengehäuse eintritt. Der Begriff stammt ursprünglich von der Wellendichtung, die mit Dichtmaterial um die Welle versehen wurde, um eine Abdichtung zu schaffen. Heute ist die Stopfbuchse einer Pumpe jedoch häufig mit einer Gleitringdichtung, einer Lippendichtung oder einer O-Pro®-Dichtung anstelle einer klassischen Packungsdichtung ausgestattet

What is a pump stuffing box?

In pumps, the stuffing box is the hollow space where the rotating shaft enters the stationary pump housing. While the term originated from shaft packing that was “stuffed” around the shaft to create a seal, today a pump’s stuffing box can be fitted with a mechanical seal, lip seal, or O-Pro® seal instead of packing.
